THE PREVENT DUTY FOR LOCAL AUTHORITIES
The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 contains a duty on specified authorities to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism, this is known as the Prevent Duty. The Prevent Duty came into force for local authorities on 1st July 2015. The Prevent Duty states that “all specified authorities subject to the Duty will need to ensure they provide appropriate training for staff involved in the implementation of this Duty”. (Prevent Duty Guidance, Home Office 2015).
We need to ensure that all council employees have a good understanding of Prevent in order to fulfil the requirements of their role.
The level of awareness and understanding of Prevent required for staff is based on:
Having a good understanding of Prevent will enable staff to know what to look out for when going about day to day work, when coming into contact with members of the public, and how to report any concerns.
